Highway Highlights recently posted an article listing the 25 most beautiful churches in Minnesota. Clearly they found it difficult to select them. However, they did a good job of choosing a range of types of beautiful churches.
On the traditional side there’s Number 25, Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church in Minnepolis. It dates back just to 1916, and it’s design is based on an iconic church in Cambridge, England, with English Rural Gothic architecture. It has a central steeple and many pointed spires. The central spire is so tall, it makes this church the 2nd tallest building in Minneapolis.
Assumption Chapel in Cold Spring, Number 22, is smaller and more modest. The current stone, Gothic-style structure on top of a bluff was built in 1951 to replace the original, which was blown down by a tornado. The original celebrated the end of a plague of grasshopprers in the area in the 1870s. View the interactive map at minneapolisnorthwest.com.
Number 9 is St. John’s Abbey Church in Collegeville is the most modern church on the list, and looks it. It’s fronted by a large structure that holds the bells and a cross, but looks like a stand holding a placard. That’s 118 feet tall. Behind it stands a wall of hexagonal stained glass windows contains the entrance. It’s part of St. John’s University. The inside is similarly bold and original.
